Imac virgin?

i just got a free imac, dont know how obsolete it is, but probably not the newest version. I plug it in, and all i get is a white screen. Am I going to need some kind of boot or startup disk, and if so, where would i get one of those? Is there some other thing wrong with this thing, or is there some on I dont know about?
