Is he really interested or just having mediocre feelings about me?

i think he likes you alot he wouldnt spend so much time with you if he didnt...even if he doesnt know alot of people. i think everything is fine and your thinking about it too much. every relationship needs communication so if anything i think you should talk to him about it. good luck
