Civil War Facts . . . The American civil war was not fought over slavery?
Its true, slavery was a key issue. And any Northerner of that time would tell you the war was fought to free the slaves. But the slaves werent anywhere near being freed by law when Ft Sumpter was attacked. The war, sometimes called "The War of Northern Agreession", was fought because Lincoln's stand was that the Federal Government had the say in anything that the states did, and could control them. The south believed that each state should make and have control of its own laws, regardless of what the federal government says. Both were right, and yet both were wrong. And were you aware that Lincoln waited to free the slaves until the north won its first big battle (Antietam) so that the slaves would all try to escape north and hold down southern troops who would try to recapture them. It was a strategic move.
